About Amanda VanderZyl

Amanda VanderZyl, M.H.A., M.P.H., is academic administrator for the Department of Medicine. In this role, she works closely with the director and vice chairs to provide oversight and coordination for the department’s strategic initiatives. Amanda is able to interact across the divisions in her work to lead efforts to recruit new division directors, name new physician leaders and work on the implementation of a transparent productivity and compensation model. She is also leading the charge to enhance communication and the department’s web presence.

Amanda graduated summa cum laude from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, with bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and political science. She received her master’s degrees in health administration and in public health from the University of Iowa. Immediately following graduate school, Amanda worked for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, focusing on the statewide expansion of outreach clinics and inpatient programs. She then was a management consultant for a Chicago-based firm, Health Care Futures, which focuses on mergers, acquisitions and productivity analyses of physician practices across the country. In 2011, Amanda joined the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa, serving first as division administrator for several divisions and ultimately as chief of staff, before joining Johns Hopkins in fall 2014.
