Fine Named Interim Director of Nephrology

I am delighted to announce that Derek Fine has agreed to serve as interim director of the Division of Nephrology effective March 1. We are confident in Dr. Fine’s ability to lead the division and maintain its strong history during this time of transition. In addition to his interim leadership role, he will serve as one of two JHM representatives on the board for the health system’s joint venture with Fresenius.

Dr. Fine came to Hopkins in 1989 to complete his medical degree and joined the Department of Medicine as an intern on the Osler Medical Service in 1994. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Nephrology and rose through the ranks to become an associate professor and director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program. Dr. Fine has proven to be proficient in all arms of our tripartite mission, publishing prominent scientific articles and book chapters and leading educational courses and clinical instruction. In 2015, he was inducted into the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence, recognizing him as a masterful physician committed to benefitting both patients and communities. He currently serves as the medical director of the Fresenius Dialysis Clinic at JHHS Caroline Street and has been invited to speak about a variety of topics throughout the country.

Board certified in nephrology, Dr. Fine’s areas of clinical expertise include nephrology, HIV- and scleroderma-related kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, kidney biopsy, lupus nephritis and rhabdomyolysis and his research interests involve HIV-related kidney diseases and lupus nephritis.

Dr. Fine will work alongside Dr. Scheel until his departure at the end of June.
