Appel Named Associate Administrator for Ambulatory Operations and Access

Mary Jo Appel began as the Associate Administrator for Ambulatory Operations and Access on June 19. Mary Jo joins us from the Wilmer Eye Institute, where she served as the Assistant Administrator for the Wilmer practices on the East Baltimore campus since 2012. Prior to joining the Johns Hopkins family, she managed a private Ophthalmology practice for 24 years. Mary Jo earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Richmond and her master's in business administration with a management concentration from Loyola College.

In her new role, Mary Jo will seek to understand where challenges lie in managing day-to-day ambulatory operations and partner with division directors, clinical directors and division administrators on implementing effective solutions. Her position will provide analyses of outpatient care delivery models and processes, and implement improvement strategies to ensure high performing patient- and provider-centered clinics. She will provide leadership, direction, regulatory support and/or guidance to all DOM ambulatory clinics, including those on the JHH campus (in partnership with Patti Engblom), JHBMC campus (in partnership with Bruce Blaylock) and satellite ambulatory practice locations.

Over the course of the next few months, Mary Jo will be spending time getting to know the department, specifically understanding its ambulatory operations, the operational and political dynamics across our multiple campuses, enhancing the ambulatory dashboard maintained in MedVitals and working with Dr. Kim Peairs (Associate Vice Chair of Ambulatory Operations) on creating a vision and priorities for ambulatory services in the DOM.
