Chulan Kwon, associate professor in the Division of Cardiology, received an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association, which supports mid-career individuals with unusual promise and commitment to cardiovascular science. The grant was funded with an outstanding priority score and a total award amount of up to $400,000.
The grant will help with his research involving heart generation and regeneration including factors and mechanisms that control the maturation process in stem cell-derived heart cells. The study aims to provide new and fundamental insights into understanding cardiac maturation and to have practical implications in generating adult cardiac cells from patient-derived stem cells in a dish. This will accelerate stem cell-based heart regenerative medicine to cure heart disease.
