Dr. Baron will be discussing how broad social changes in trust and authority are having an impact on health care. Using the historical roots of medical licensure and board certification as an example of professional self-regulation designed to build trust, he will describe the impact of electronic media and omnipresent access to information on medical practice. He will present data on declines in trust and link them to a predicament increasingly faced by the profession as it seeks to maintain legitimacy and credibility with patients.
