Lee and Siddharthan Launch Uganda Bronchoscopy and Pleural Program

Hans Lee, associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary, and Trishul Siddharthan, assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, are leaders of the Uganda Bronchoscopy and Pleural Program (UBP) that went live earlier this month. The UBP established equipment and training for the first public bronchoscopy program in Uganda at the Makerere Lung Institute in Kampala, Uganda. This program is part of a five-year collaboration between DOM faculty and Makerere College of Health Sciences to build research and clinical capacity to improve lung health in Uganda. Uganda has a population of 45 million people with an estimated 20 percent of the adult population suffering from a chronic respiratory condition. The UBP has trained three Ugandan pulmonologist in bronchoscopy and pleural ultrasound in its first phase who will then "train the trainers" in the second phase to further build capacity in bronchoscopy and pleural disease management across East Africa.
