Junior Faculty Leadership Series

The School of Medicine’s Office of Faculty Development (OFD) is now accepting registrations for the 2022 Junior Faculty Leadership Series (JFLS).

The goal of the program is to provide junior faculty members (including PhD and clinical associates and research associates) who are at the level of assistant professor and at rank more than one year but less than five years with the opportunity to:

  • Develop and build foundational career and leadership skills
  • Think proactively about their future roles as leaders in academic medicine
  • Build a network of supportive peers and potential collaborators
  • Develop strategies for maintaining wellness and resilience

  1. January 24, 9:00am-10:30am: Introduction to Core Leadership Competencies(Rachel Levine, MD, MPH and Kimberly Skarupski, PhD, MPH) – In this session, we will define leadership both broadly and specifically for junior faculty members. We will review the JHU Leadership Competency Matrix, think about our values and develop our personal mission statement.
  2. February 9, 11:00am-12:30pm: Mapping out Your Career/Strategies for Success (Rachel Levine, MD, MPH and Kimberly Skarupski, PhD, MPH) – This session will guide you in the framing of your career goals and objectives, including reflecting on your values and personal mission statement, and identifying specific development gaps and needs. Participants will work in small groups to review and refine goals and objectives and create an individual development plan. Strategies and habits for academic life and leadership will be shared.
  3. February 24, 1:00pm-2:30pm: Professional Relationships and Collaboration (Rachel Levine, MD, MPH and Kimberly Skarupski, PhD, MPH) – Learn about key professional relationships and how to leverage these for successful achievement of individual and shared career goals. We will introduce mentorship, sponsorship, coaching, and followership and explore in what situations these relationships are critical.
  4. March 7, 9:30am-11:00am: Using and Understanding your MBTI Personality Type to be More Influential (Kimberly Skarupski, PhD, MPH) – This session presents a basic theoretical framework from the behavioral sciences including personality and motivational styles and how they influence communication, conflict, and decision-making. The focus is on ‘knowing yourself to better manage yourself and others.’
  5. March 24, 1:00pm-2:30pm: Making the Most of the Mentee/Mentor and Sponsor Experience (Jennifer Haythornthwaite, PhD) – In this session, you will explore how to be a more effective mentee, including how to identify and select the best mentors. You will also learn how to maximize the benefit you receive from your mentor(s) through scheduling, planning and organization, and providing/receiving feedback in a positive way.
  6. April 4, 10:00am-11:30am: Negotiation (Catherine Morrison, JD) – How can you negotiate more productively to get what you need without creating conflict with others or damaging relationships? This highly interactive workshop will help you “grow your pie” and get your fair share without alienating important relationships. Participants will understand and apply a systematic approach to preparing for, structuring, and engaging in a variety of negotiations.
  7. April 28, 1:30pm-3:00pm: Managing and Mediating Conflict (Kimberly Skarupski, PhD, MPH and David Yousem, MD, MBA) – This session starts with the essentials of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and uses the Thomas-Kilmann model to understand options for handling conflict. Participants will practice identifying potential conflicts, resolving, and managing conflict at various levels. Participants will also be exposed to the fundamentals of transformative conflict mediation.
  8. May 11, 9:30am-11:00am: Presenting Yourself as a Leader: Portraying your best self in poster presentations, podium speeches, and grand rounds (Steven Cohen, PhD, MPP)  – You’ve worked hard on your presentation – your delivery should do it justice. Captivate your audience with the important information you’ve prepared. In this session, you will learn specific strategies to make every presentation relevant and impactful. You will cultivate your personal presentation style, while honing your leadership and speaking skills through hands-on exercises.
  9. May 24, 9:30am-11:00am: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Leadership (Demere Woolway, PhD) – This session is based on the principle that the better we understand ourselves, the better suited we are to deal with difference. Together, we will discuss a number of exercises designed to examine and strengthen your skills with emotional intelligence and diversity. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your own identity and consider how these identities shape our workplace.
  10. June 8, 12:00pm-1:30pm: Design Thinking (Danielle Piccinini Black, MBA, MPH) – Design Thinking is a creative approach to problem-solving utilized across industries by many of today’s most innovative and competitive companies and organizations. Its emphases on empathy, iterative prototyping and testing are essential for designing novel solutions with and for the intended users. During this session, you will be introduced to the principles of design thinking as well as examples of how and why it is being used today. You will also have an opportunity to flex your creative problem-solving skills with some hands-on practice with design thinking tools!
