Flanagan Named Director of Nursing for the Departments of Medicine and Radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital

It is our pleasure to announce that Eleni Flanagan, DNP, MBA, RN-BC, has been appointed to the position of director of nursing for the Departments of Medicine and Radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, effective May 22. Eleni has served as the interim director of these departments since October 2021 and, prior to that, was the assistant director of nursing for the Department of Medicine since March 2016.

Eleni has worked in nursing at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for 27 years, holding a variety of clinical and leadership roles. She has been the nurse manager for three units during her tenure — the Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (2011–16), the Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratory and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (2004–11) and the hospitalist unit (2003–04). Prior to her management positions, she served as a cardiology case manager (2001– 03). Eleni gained her clinical experience here at Johns Hopkins on Halsted 5 and the cardiac intensive care unit.

Eleni holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Delaware, a master of business administration degree from The Johns Hopkins University, and a master’s degree in nursing, as well as a doctor of nursing practice degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

With a strong background in collaborative leadership, Eleni excels at creating engaged, high-functioning teams and bringing members of other clinical areas together to maximize efficiencies and provide high-quality, compassionate care. She was instrumental in opening the hospitalist unit — hiring and leading a team of nursing staff members enthusiastic about the concept of creating a new unit in the hospital, and partnering with providers and other members of the care team to launch the 15-bed medical and surgical telemetry unit. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Eleni collaborated closely with multiple disciplines to create biocontainment units for over 120 COVID-positive patients cared for in the Department of Medicine.

Focused on the retention and professional growth of her staff, she has implemented creative staffing and engagement strategies, and serves as a coach and mentor to the next generation of nursing leaders in the department.

Please join us in congratulating Eleni on her appointment as the director of nursing for the Departments of Medicine and Radiology.
