The Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Geriatric Society took place May 4-6 in Long Beach, California. The below members of the DOM and their mentees were recognized at the event.
Eduardo Biala, a medical student who spent the summer of 2022 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center as part of the National Institute on Aging funded MSTAR program presented a poster and an oral at the recent meeting of the American Geriatric Society received the award for best poster in Geriatric Medicine/Other Specialties of the Presidential Poster session. Dr. Biala worked with Dr. Susan Gearhart, Dr. April Ehrlich, fellow in the Division of Geriatric Medicine & Gerontology, Dianne Bettick, Dr. Oluwafemi Owodunni and Dr. Luxey Sirisegaram. This fantastic team evaluated a brief version of a frailty screen to find older adults at high risk for non-elective surgery as they come into the health system. This work is key to ongoing efforts to receive Geriatric Surgery Verification as part of our age-friendly initiative.
Dr. Rohin Aggarwal, junior resident in the Osler Medical Residency, won third place in the Resident Poster Session for his poster: “Hope for the Best, Plan for the Worst: An Approach to Palliative Care While Awaiting Transplantation.”
Dr. Shivani Bhatnagar, intern in the Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program, won fourth place in the Resident Poster Session for her poster “Evaluating Internal Medicine Residents' Knowledge in Incorporating Advance Care Planning Discussions in Clinic Visit” in the Quality Improvement Category.
Dr. Halima Amjad received the 2023 Outstanding Junior Investigator of the Year Award during the plenary awards presentation at AGS for her impressive body of work on improving dementia care.
