Ageism Awareness Day

Ageism Awareness Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the impact of ageism in our society and how we can reframe aging in our communities. Check out the Ageism Awareness Day toolkit for more resources, including an ageism fact sheet, a call to action with ideas on how to get involved and sample materials that you can use to advocate for ageism awareness with local media and government officials.

According to Dr. Becca Levy’s research at Yale University that looked into eight health conditions prevalent among seniors, the one-year cost of ageism was $63 billion, or one of every seven dollars spent on the eight health conditions on which the study focused. Also, the research model suggests that ageism resulted in 17.04 million cases of these health conditions.

This year, the DOM Division of Geriatric Medicine & Gerontology is celebrating:

“Geriatrics Healthcare Professionals Enjoy High Levels of Career Satisfaction. In several studies, geriatrics ranks among the most satisfying health professions. In fact, one study reported that geriatricians had the highest job satisfaction of physicians practicing in any subspecialty.”
