Johnson to Step Down as Program Director of the Bayview IM Residency

Dr. Erica Johnson will step down as Program Director for the Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program on September 30, 2024. She will become the Senior Vice President for Academic and Medical Affairs at the American Board of Internal Medicine in October. This is an incredible opportunity for Dr. Johnson, and we are very excited to witness what her impact can do on a national level.

As Program Director of the Bayview Internal Medicine Residency since 2015, Dr. Johnson has been champion for diversity and creating new experiences for residents. She has adeptly continued the program’s legacy of humanism by prioritizing empathy and community, earning a myriad of awards for both herself and the program along the way. Dr. Johnson will also step down from her role as DOM Associate Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Education. She has been proficient in this role since its inception in 2021, and we are grateful for everything she has done to enhance the success of UIM trainees throughout her leadership.

We're grateful to Dr. Sammy Zakaria, who has agreed to step in as interim program director beginning October 1. Dr. Zakaria has led the program as Associate Program Director alongside Dr. Johnson throughout her tenure and is particularly poised to step in during this transition.

We are also thankful that Dr. Johnson will not be going far. She will remain on the DOM faculty in a part-time capacity in order to see patients in the Division of Infectious Diseases and support the Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program as a core faculty member. Please join us in thanking both Drs. Johnson and Zakaria for their leadership and wishing Erica all the best in her new role.
