Department of Medicine Mentoring Awards

If you are a full- or part-time faculty member or a post-doctoral fellow (MD, MD-PhD, or PhD) within the DOM and would like to acknowledge the contributions of an outstanding mentor, please consider submitting a DOM Mentoring Award nomination packet.

All full- or part-time faculty members with a primary appointment within the DOM are eligible for nomination. Nominators are responsible for collecting all required documents and submitting the completed packet by the nomination deadline. Previous Levine and Brancati awardees are not eligible. Please review the criteria for the awards.

Mentoring Awards Nomination Deadline: Monday, March 24, 2025

A complete, competitive packet for each award includes:

1. Primary nominating letter that addresses the award criteria
   • Nominating letter must be no more than 4-pages in length and must be signed by the nominator
   • If you have previously nominated this candidate, please update the letter and other materials as applicable
2. 4 supporting letters from previous or current mentees
   • Each supporting letter must be no more than 2-pages in length.
   • The committee will not accept more than four supporting letters. If more than four are received, you will be asked to select the four you would like to be included in the nominating packet
3. A complete list of current and former mentees
   • This list can be included in the nominee’s CV or submitted in your preferred format
4. Nominee’s updated CV

David M. Levine Excellence in Mentoring Award

Mid-career and senior faculty (late Associate Professor and Professor)

Criteria

• Model for integrity and professionalism within the DOM
• Evidence of mentoring (Skills); helping mentees to
  1. Advance in career and promotion (e.g., collaborations, networking, presenting, completing specific projects - collaborative or interdisciplinary)
  2. Develop leadership skills and other academic skills
  3. Balance career and personal life
  4. Gain peer review and other sources of funding
  5. Disseminate their work
• History of mentoring (Scope)
  1. Number of Mentees
  2. Accomplishments of mentees (e.g. current position, grant support, publications, regional and national recognition, leadership)
  3. Innovative approaches to mentoring
• Mentoring includes excellence in research, education and program building

Frederick L. Brancati Excellence in Mentoring Award

Early stage faculty (Assistant Professor or early Associate Professor--within 3 years of promotion)

Criteria

• Primary or joint appointment in Department of Medicine
• Model for integrity and professionalism within the DOM
• Evidence of mentoring (Skills), helping mentees to
  1. Select their career path (e.g. by providing professional and academic guidance)
  2. Advance their career (e.g. by providing clinical and research opportunities, integrating mentees into research teams)
  3. Develop academic skills (e.g. by assisting mentees with preparing abstracts and papers, presenting results)
  4. Disseminate their work
  5. Balance career and personal life
  6. Encouraging interdisciplinary work
• History of mentoring (Scope)
  1. Number of mentees
  2. Accomplishments of mentees (e.g. current position, presentations, awards, publications)
  3. Innovative approaches to mentoring
• Mentoring requires excellence in research, education and clinical program building
