Quinn/Tobian Lab Among 2025 Freezer Challenge Winners

The Thomas Quinn/Aaron Tobian Lab and team earned the Top Medium Sized Lab Award in the Academic Sector of the International Freezer Challenge. The award was presented to the lab that saved the most energy among labs with 10 to 25 people. Through their efforts, the Quinn/Tobian Lab saved 168 kWh/day. Dr. Thomas Quinn is a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases.

The International Freezer Challenge includes more than 3,700 labs globally and is hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories and My Green Lab. The goal of the challenge is to encourage labs to reduce the environmental impact of cold storage units. This year, Johns Hopkins was the top-ranked academic organization out of 112 organizations that competed. JHU efforts alone resulted in an estimated conservation of 1560 kWh/day, or the equivalent of nearly 50 single family homes.
