Berkowitz to Depart Johns Hopkins Medicine

After more than 22 years of service, Dr. Scott Berkowitz, vice president of population health and chief population health officer for JHM, will be leaving to take the position of vice president and chief medical officer for Weill Cornell Medical Center at New York Presbyterian. His last day at Johns Hopkins will be Oct. 1.

Scott first came to Johns Hopkins in 2003 as an Osler intern. He became the inaugural medical director of accountable care, and joined the cardiology faculty in 2011, achieving the rank of associate professor of medicine in 2016. As a member of the Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians leadership team — and working with faculty and staff across the enterprise — he helped launch and oversee several major initiatives at JHM, such as the Johns Hopkins Community Health Partnership, the Johns Hopkins Medicine Alliance for Patients accountable care organization and care transformation organization, and the JHM skilled nursing facility collaborative.

In 2020, after a national search, Scott was selected to become the inaugural chief population health officer for JHM. In this capacity, he assembled a talented team and helped launch the Office of Population Health. Some of the team’s accomplishments under his leadership include: execution of a population health strategic plan, with guiding stars of reducing avoidable utilization and improving health outcomes; serving primary care practices with care management, behavioral health, pharmacy, community health and analytics; collaborating with hospitals, home care and others on care transitions and readmission reduction; supporting the Baltimore Metropolitan Diabetes Regional Partnership deployment; and launching the JHM Cost and Utilization Council to develop and execute solutions.

As a practicing general cardiologist, Scott is highly regarded for his clinical acumen, communication skills and patient-centered approach. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, where he has served on expert committees and provided thought leadership. Scott’s academic focus has been on innovation in care delivery and payment models, and he has spoken and written extensively on these topics, clearly demonstrating his national leadership. He has served on numerous boards, and he was appointed by former Gov. Larry Hogan to serve as the Johns Hopkins University representative on the State of Maryland Board of Physicians. In addition to this, Scott has mentored and provided career guidance to countless Johns Hopkins learners. He has been steadfast in his dedication to our patients and the broader Johns Hopkins community, as well as to the tripartite mission of JHM.

Dr. Peter Hill, senior vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer of the Johns Hopkins Health System, will take on the interim role leading JHM population health efforts.
