On Thursday, September 18, Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham, OM, KBE, PC, FRS, visited Hopkins to meet with leaders and discuss the Fleming Initiative.
Lord Ara Darzi is the executive chair of the Fleming Initiative as well as co-director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation of the Imperial College of London and the Honorary Consultant Surgeon of the Imperial College Hospital in England. While at Hopkins, he signed an agreement between JHU, the Imperial College London, and the Fleming Initiative. The Fleming Initiative’s goal is to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) globally. Lord Darzi, traveled to JHU to meet with faculty across the School of Medicine and School of Public Health to discuss how JHU can become a part of the initiative as the U.S.-centered hub. This is the first step in solidifying this relationship that will hopefully lead to expanded research initiatives around AMR, including clinical trials, joint fundraising activities, and future convenings.
Lord Darzi also gave a special lecture entitled: The Fleming Initiative: A Bold & Ambitious Approach to Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance, sponsored by the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of International Health in the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
