Remembering Dr. Larry Waterbury

Dr. Larry Waterbury, former chief of hematology, passed away in Baltimore in November. He came to Baltimore in 1970 and was director of the old Baltimore City Hospitals blood bank, now known as Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

“Larry was perhaps the most beloved member of the medical faculty at Bayview from 1970 till he retired in 2012,” said Dr. Randy Barker in the obituary in the Baltimore Sun. “There was a gentleness to him in the way he treated patients and in his speech, which had a bit of a Texas drawl."

Dr. Waterbury will be remembered by many. The Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program honors Dr. Waterbury each year by recognizing an excellent resident with an award named in his honor.

Dr. Randy Barker has commemorated Dr. Waterbury with a collection of poems he has shared "in hopes that they will help you also to keep Larry with you."
