O’Rourke Named Director of Primary Care Leadership Track for M.D. Students

The Office of the Vice Dean for Education and the Office of Medical Student Curriculum are pleased to announce that Dr. Paul O’Rourke has been named director of the Primary Care Leadership Track for medical students. Dr. O’Rourke succeeds the director and founder of the Primary Care Leadership Track, Dr. Colleen Christmas.

Dr. O’Rourke is an associate professor in the Division of Bayview Internal Medicine and assistant dean for medical student affairs at the School of Medicine. In his role as assistant dean, he is an enthusiastic advocate for students as they progress toward their degree.

Primary care (PC) and PC education have been principal aspects of Dr. O’Rourke’s career and passion. He first came to Johns Hopkins in 2014, caring for patients in the East Baltimore community with PC education as a major focus of his medical education interests. As Primary Care Track director for the Johns Hopkins Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program for eight years, he championed major advancements in the PC track, obtained multiple education grants and disseminated scholarship related to their innovations, and increased the number of residents pursuing PC careers upon graduation.

Nationally, Dr. O’Rourke serves as an editor and contributor to the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Primary Care Track Toolkit and has published extensively on PC education. He was also recognized for his contributions to PC education and promoting PC with the Outstanding Primary Care Faculty Award from the Primary Care Consortium and the Frederick L. Brancati Mentorship and Leadership Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. O’Rourke to his new role. We look forward to continued elevation of primary care in the medical student education program and new opportunities for students in our Primary Care Leadership Track.
