Dr. James (Jamie) Hamilton was named Director of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology effective March 1.
Dr. Hamilton has successfully served as interim director of the Division since January 2024, during which time he provided steady, thoughtful leadership and helped guide the Division through a period of continued growth and national recognition. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, a member of the National Review Board for the United Network for Organ Sharing, and has been continuously funded by the NIH since 2008 with more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Hamilton earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland and then completed an internal medicine residency at Northwestern. He returned to the University of Maryland to complete a gastroenterology fellowship before coming to Hopkins to complete the advanced hepatology/liver transplant fellowship. Since joining the faculty at Hopkins in 2007, he has served as director of hepatology for JHM and program director of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship and has co-directed the Genes to Society Curriculum for the GI and Liver Section and the Pilot and Feasibility Award Program of the NIH/JHU Digestive Disease Core. His clinical specialties include Wilson disease, autoimmune hepatitis, liver transplantation, and the management of the complications of cirrhosis. Dr. Hamilton is known for his patient care and has been named a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine each year since 2018. He is also a prolific investigator, with interests including copper homeostasis and its regulation of lipid metabolism and liver injury, the fundamental mechanisms regulating liver fibrosis, and the molecular genetics of hepatocellular carcinoma and early detection biomarkers.
Under Dr. Hamilton’s leadership, the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology has continued to flourish while expanding its reach, now providing care across three hospitals, seven outpatient clinical locations, four ambulatory surgical centers, and three infusion centers—ensuring that patients have access to exceptional, comprehensive GI and liver care across the region.
