Dr. Wendy Bennett, associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, has been named the new GIM Fellowship Director. Dr. Bennett is a GIM fellowship graduate, who brings exceptional experience as a clinician-investigator, mentor, and program leader. She has long contributed to the success of the GIM fellowship program, serving on the fellowship committee for many years and actively reviewing, supporting, and advising fellows. Her mentorship has helped fellows and junior faculty successfully compete for career development awards and diversity supplements.
Dr. Bennett will succeed Dr. Nisa Maruthur. The GIM Division wishes to express its immense gratitude to Dr. Maruthur for the leadership and dedication she has shown to our trainees and programs. Her commitment to advancing training has strengthened the fellowship and prepared it for continued success. She will become the Director of the Division of Hospital and General Internal Medicine and Vice Chair for Clinical Operations for the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland starting in April 2026. Dr. Maruthur’s pioneering work in diabetes prevention and individualized care for type 2 diabetes has earned national and international recognition. Her leadership has strengthened GIM's clinical, research, and training programs, and her dedication to mentoring, community engagement, and advancing evidence-based care exemplifies the very best of academic general internal medicine.
Dr. Samantha Pitts, associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, is the new Clinical Director of GIM at Greenspring Station. Dr. Pitts brings exceptional experience and vision to this role. She has led impactful initiatives in ambulatory quality and safety, medication safety, health information technology, and evidence-based primary care. She is nationally recognized for her work in quality improvement and patient safety education and has been a key builder of our ambulatory quality and safety programs since joining the faculty in 2014.
