We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Sulkowski as the new Director of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, effective July 1. A distinguished clinician-scientist and accomplished academic leader, Dr. Sulkowski brings more than two decades of experience at Hopkins and a deep commitment to the Bayview community.
Dr. Sulkowski has served as Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Bayview since 2019 and currently serves as Associate Dean for Research in the Capital Region, where he has led research at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, Suburban Hospital, and Sibley Memorial Hospital since 2018. In these roles, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing clinical care, research, and education. As Division Director, he successfully expanded clinical services, strengthened inpatient and outpatient programs, and led key initiatives such as antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, and the growth of the Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) program—improving care delivery while reducing length of stay and readmissions. Dr. Sulkowski will step down as Division Director and Associate Dean to fill this new role.
At the SOM level, Dr. Sulkowski has led major efforts to enhance clinical research infrastructure, supporting thousands of faculty and accelerating the translation of scientific discovery into patient care. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was instrumental in establishing system-wide clinical research programs and advancing novel diagnostics and therapeutics. Dr. Sulkowski will continue to serve the SOM faculty as the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Trials and the Director of the Office of Clinical Trials.
A nationally recognized expert in infectious diseases, Dr. Sulkowski has led groundbreaking work in viral hepatitis, including efforts that dramatically reduced hepatitis C burden among patients in the Hopkins HIV clinic and expanded access to curative therapies for vulnerable populations. His work reflects a strong commitment to health equity, community engagement, and improving outcomes for underserved patients.
As Director of the DOM at JHBMC, Dr. Sulkowski is committed to fostering a collaborative, inclusive environment that supports faculty, trainees, and staff while advancing Bayview’s tripartite mission of clinical care, research, and education. His vision emphasizes program growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continued investment in innovation and discovery.
Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Sulkowski to this important leadership role.
