Allan Gelber, professor in the Division of Rheumatology, will succeed David Pearse as chair of the Department of Medicine Appointments and Promotions Committee. Dr. Gelber is an accomplished educator, clinician, mentor and investigator. The range of his academic pursuits in each of these domains contribute to his broad appreciation of scholarship. His longstanding commitment to faculty development and his enthusiastic support for Hopkins colleagues underscore his advocacy for all DOM faculty.
Dr. Gelber is an active and accomplished clinician, mentor and teacher. He currently attends on the Zieve Medical Unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview and the Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital, as well as on the Rheumatology Consultation Service at JHH. He has proven to be a valued mentor of housestaff, rheumatology fellows and junior faculty. He directs the Musculoskeletal Section of the Genes-to-Society course to the second year medical school class and the Clinical Clerkship in Rheumatology. Dr. Gelber has received the Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Preclinical and Clinical Sciences and the W. Barry Wood, Jr. Award as an outstanding pre-clinical teacher.
He has deep experience in career development at all stages of the academic career continuum. Dr. Gelber previously served as program director of the Rheumatology Fellowship program, and now as deputy director for faculty development in the Division of Rheumatology. He has used formalized mentoring to shape professional careers in an extraordinary way, and guided numerous transitions to successful faculty careers.
During his time on faculty, Dr. Gelber has been actively engaged as a clinical investigator utilizing epidemiology as an investigative tool to identify risk factors and outcomes in the rheumatic diseases. He has received peer-reviewed funding from the Arthritis Foundation, American College of Rheumatology, Stabler and Greene Foundations and the NIH. He is an associate faculty member at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research.
Allan also serves as chair of the M.D. Admissions Committee in the School of Medicine. He is eager to utilize all these experiences to work with committee members, the vice chair for faculty development and with departmental leadership to advocate for faculty whose pursuits involve each of the academic pathways at our medical school.
