Epic Tip of the Week: October 30, 2020

Inpatient & Ambulatory: Information Blocking Rule => Result Release and Notes Delayed until 3/25/2021

  • The federal enforcement of the 21st Century Cures Act information blocking rule is being delayed six months.
  • Immediate sharing of most results and notes will be delayed until March 25, 2021.
  • On Monday, Nov 2, 2020, Johns Hopkins will proceed with sharing problem list diagnoses and full names of care team members.
    • When placing an order, the “Immediate” button will be replaced with a defaulted “Standard” button.
    • When selecting “Standard” the current result release workflows (which can be found HERE) will continue to be followed.
    • When selecting “Manual” it will be necessary to provide the rationale for not allowing release; the result can still be released manually after it is finalized, if desired.

Inpatient & Ambulatory: Daylight Saving Ends This Weekend

  • At 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov 1, 2020, the time will “fall back” and the 1 – 2 a.m. hour will be repeated.
  • Epic entries made between the first or the second 1–2 a.m. hour will be sorted by time stamp, and not by the order in which they were entered or resulted; therefore, entries from the first and second hours may be interspersed. Consideration should be given when interpreting entries made during this time.
  • To facilitate subsequent interpretation of the sequence of events between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., please document if the note is being written in the hour before or after the time change.

Inpatient & Ambulatory: Healthcare Cyber Threats

  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued an advisory regarding an uptick in ransomware activity in the health care sector.
  • Johns Hopkins Information Technology and Security teams closely monitor these threats and make enhancement to our systems to ensure they are safeguarded. Please approach opening email attachments or links with caution.

Inpatient & Ambulatory: Changes to CRISP InContext App

  • This change affects the default landing tab of the CRISP InContext app, “Medication Management.”
  • A new subtab, “ADVISORIES” was added as an alternative to landing on the PDMP subtab.
  • Four prescription metrics, for the past 90 days, will display on the ADVISORIES tab, for quick identification of patients at increased risk of overdose.
  • “Patient Advisories” has been renamed “Clinical Alerts”; an alert appears when information about prior medication overdose events are received from syndromic surveillance feeds.
  • PDMP can still be accessed, from either the PDMP tab to the right of ADVISORIES, or from the “View PDMP” button at the bottom of the subtab.

Inpatient & Ambulatory: Using Letters communications to report to a referring provider

  • Use the Referring Provider template when sending communication to referring providers.
  • Selecting the Reason type of “Referring Provider” will ensure the letter will not be released to MyChart.
  • Tip sheet is found here.
