Weisfeldt Receives Watkins-Saunders Award

Dr. Myron Weisfeldt, professor in the Division of Cardiology and former director of the Department of Medicine, was selected to receive the Watkins-Saunders Award from the American Heart Association. This award recognizes outstanding commitment to overcoming health and community disparities in the state of Maryland.

Established in 2012, the Watkins-Saunders Award honors Dr. Levi Watkins and Dr. Elijah Saunders, both pioneers in the field of cardiology who were committed to equality in health care. This award is given to individuals and/or organizations in the state of Maryland who champion the fight against health disparities through clinical or medical work,  or through community community improvements. Dr. Weisfeldt has helped launch hundreds of careers in academic medicine. He was an early strong proponent of recruiting more women and underserved minorities into medicine to serve as the next generation of clinician-scientists. He was honored at the 2021 Watkins-Saunders Heart of Maryland Celebration.
