Yarmus Named Head of Division of Subspecialty Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Lonny Yarmus has been named head of the Division of Subspecialty Medicine within the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). He will step down as Vice Chair for the Department of Medicine effective March 1.

Dr. Yarmus is a physician-scientist and international leader in interventional pulmonology and procedural innovation, recognized for his expertise in minimally invasive diagnostics and therapeutics, outcomes research, and multidisciplinary program development. He came to Hopkins in 2009 to complete an interventional pulmonology fellowship in the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and joined the DOM faculty in 2010. A prominent leader from the start, Dr. Yarmus soon became the program director for the Interventional Pulmonary Fellowship before serving as clinical director of the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine from 2014-2023 until he became vice chair for clinical business development & strategy for the DOM. During his time at Hopkins, Dr. Yarmus has built one of the nation’s premier interventional pulmonary clinical and research programs and led multiple NIH and sponsored multicenter clinical trials. He is the founder and executive director of the Interventional Pulmonary Outcomes Group (IPOG), a global collaborative research consortium dedicated to advancing outcomes-based investigations in minimally invasive thoracic procedures. His work has driven national and international standards in robotic bronchoscopy, cryobiopsy, and advanced diagnostic imaging, resulting in numerous ongoing multicenter trials.

In his new role, Dr. Yarmus will lead a division with a diverse portfolio of clinical and academic programs that span infectious diseases, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, cardiology, pulmonary, dermatology, and other subspecialties essential to comprehensive cancer care.
