Leadership Spotlight
WELL's new monthly Leadership Spotlight aims to celebrate individuals across the Department of Medicine who make a difference through everyday leadership. Leadership is not limited to formal roles, and eligibility is open to all levels of staff, faculty, and trainees who exhibit leadership through mentorship, collaboration, inclusion, or support for team well-being. Submit a nomination.
Don Mendell, MBA, clinical operations manager in the Division of Rheumatology, is our August Leadership Spotlight recipient.
Here’s what colleagues had to say about him:
- "What makes Don stand out as a leader is his ability to pair strong operational leadership with a calm, dependable, and people-centered approach. He consistently removes barriers, supports his team, communicates clearly, and builds trust across staff and faculty, all while keeping the focus on high-quality patient care and smooth clinic operations. Feedback from 17 faculty and staff further reinforced his impact, with colleagues most frequently describing him as a strong team developer, problem-solver, trust-builder, and clear communicator."
- "Don has had a strong impact on his team and colleagues by creating a more stable, coordinated, and solutions-oriented clinic environment. His leadership has helped staff and faculty work more effectively together, strengthened accountability and communication, and supported a culture where people feel supported in addressing challenges quickly and professionally. As a result, his influence has extended beyond daily operations to strengthen both team functioning and the broader patient care environment."
