Many of our faculty and staff members have been asking about opportunities to volunteer in the community surrounding the East Baltimore campus. The Henderson-Hopkins school, a partnership between the Johns Hopkins University School of Education and Baltimore City Public Schools, recently asked for volunteer support from the Johns Hopkins Medicine community.
Below are a few of the long- and short-term possibilities available:
- Student-centered long-term opportunities: Volunteers are needed for two projects: one-on-one mentoring for Big Brothers Big Sisters and personalized learning math tutoring. The minimal commitment is at least one hour a week for one year.
- Teacher support short-term opportunities: Based on teacher or school needs, volunteers who are interested in short-term assignments can add their names to a database to indicate their areas of interest. The school will connect volunteers with teachers or school support staff members who need assistance. Opportunities include Adopt-a-Class, reading to classes, health education, class presentations, teacher administrative support, speaking at middle school assemblies and health and career fair support. The time commitment varies from one-time opportunities to monthly.
- Community-involved outside projects/events/partnerships: Johns Hopkins Medicine departments or outside organizations that would like to design or sponsor a volunteer project or event to benefit Henderson-Hopkins students are encouraged to contact the school to begin the application and review process. The time commitment varies based on the project or event.
