New Leadership Roles in the Department of Medicine

With such a large department with multiple missions competing for attention, the role of administrator can best be tackled by splitting the position to allow each administrator to focus on a more specific set of tasks. With this in mind, I decided to name two internal candidates as administrators for our department going forward.

Matt Lautzenheiser and Amanda VanderZyl have been named clinical administrator and academic administrator of the Department of Medicine, respectively. These two positions now complete the administrative teams at the East Baltimore and Bayview campuses.

As the clinical administrator, Matt will work with the vice chairs and Randy Komenski, director of operations at Bayview, to prioritize inpatient operations, satellite and clinic operations as well as quality and safety assurance.

As the academic administrator, Amanda will continue to lead faculty efforts and compensation model development as well as help support the sponsored team in moving forward our research goals. She will partner with Jill Kearney, administrator for the Department of Medicine at Bayview and assistant dean of JHBMC to tackle these strategic priorities.

Doug Brooks, director of finance, continues to run financial operations across both campuses with the help of Becky Hanst, assistant director of finance. Doug and Becky lead the finance teams on both campuses and in the divisions to manage the budget process and ongoing departmental financial performance for both the university and the Johns Hopkins academic hospitals.
