The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have funded five new Children's Centers to study the negative effects pollutants in the environment have on children. Nadia Hansel, associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary, and Greg Diette, professor in the Division of Pulmonary will lead the Johns Hopkins Center for the Study of Childhood Asthma in the Urban Environment (CCAUE), which will study how obese children with asthma respond to air pollution. The center has already shown that replacing unvented gas stoves can reduce indoor air pollution, and that consumption of broccoli sprouts may be insufficient to prevent lung inflammation from indoor air pollutants.
