Goals and Focus for 2016

Fiscal and academic year 2016 will continue to experience the dramatic change affecting all facets of our healthcare environment. Your Clinical Affairs Team goals are reflective of responses to the highest priority changes impacting our mission, while still focused on our vision to:

  • Deliver the highest quality, patient-centered care
  • Develop innovations in clinical care delivery
  • Lead clinical integration efforts across the department and health system

More than ever before, we remain committed to partnering with the department’s dedicated faculty, staff and trainees—to achieve goals designed to support our reputation as a world leader in patient care, education and research. Among our many goals, focus areas include:

Quality, Safety & Service

  • Strategies to improve physician satisfaction within the practice of medicine environment
  • Documentation of co-morbid conditions to better reflect patient complexity
  • Physician and nurse communication strategies to optimize the patient experience
  • Joint Commission sepsis guidelines
  • Hand hygiene compliance (inpatient & outpatient)
  • CAUTI & CLABSI hospital-acquired infection rates
  • Inpatient falls with injury
  • Venous thromboembolism prevention and care

Inpatient Operations

  • Inpatient Epic implementation at BMC & JHH
  • The Joint Commission visits to BMC & JHH
  • Syncope and diabetes protocol to avoid unnecessary admission from ED
  • HAL/Urgent transfer process between BMC and JHH
  • Inpatient capacity optimization, inclusive of focus on risk-adjusted length of stay
  • Financial support model for our hospitalist programs

Ambulatory Operations

  • Patient appointment cancellations with less than 30 days’ notice by a provider
  • Open encounter compliance and communication
  • Alignment of select procedural operations across campuses
  • Enhancement of infusion services
  • Strategies to reduce in-office wait time and to improve communication of test results
  • Scheduling patient questionnaire for remaining DOM divisions

Revenue Cycle

  • Epic professional fee billing
  • ICD-10 implementation
  • JHH DOM and JHU DOM revenue cycle alignment
  • Bad debt reduction
