Research Storage Guidance

New Data Science Resources

The ResearchIT team at https://ResearchIT.jh.edu (and accessed via the ResearchIT Intake Form) has enabled access to expanded PHI-compliant tools to support data science, including:

  • SAFER (and SAFE) desktop – an enhanced version of the SAFE desktop, with greater processing power, and increasing security. The SAFE and SAFER environments differ, and you may want to initiate a consultation with ResearchIT to see which environment might be right for you
  • SAFESTOR – research data storage with increased capacity (up to 100 TB, with the first 10 TB free for 3 years), increased security (against breach and loss), and access to high performance computing; SAFESTOR appears on the SAFE and SAFER desktops as the “R:” drive.
  • DISCOVERY HPC – the high performance computing (HPC) environment for research, free through FY25

NOTE: though convenient for office-related document sharing and (with any relevant approvals) data sharing, OneDrive and its related tools SharePoint and Teams are not best practice for data storage – because of increased risk for data loss, data breach, and insufficient data provenance (data history) for research integrity.

Consult ResearchIT (or reach out to Dr. Stuart Ray, our Vice Chair for Data Integrity and Analytics) if you are not sure what resource(s) might be suitable for your data storage.
