Naik Named Associate Division Director

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Rakhi Naik has been appointed the Associate Division Director of the Division of Hematology, effective December 1.

Dr. Naik also serves as Director of Organ Systems Foundation of Medicine, the largest pre-clerkship course in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She specializes in education innovation, outcomes and policy in sickle cell trait, and recruitment and retention in non-malignant (classical) hematology. Dr. Naik serves in several national education roles, including the 2024 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Education Program Co-Chair and as Chair of the ASH Hematology-Focused Fellowship Program Consortium. In her latter role, she spearheaded the expansion of the Johns Hopkins Hematology Track model to 12 academic institutions in the U.S. as an innovative strategy to address the critical shortage of trainees in classical hematology. Dr. Naik has been recognized with numerous teaching awards, including the 2024 JHU Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Naik is widely recognized as an expert on the epidemiology of outcomes related to sickle cell trait. She serves as Chair of the ASH Sickle Cell Trait Task Force and has led several large studies using NHLBI population-based cohorts to define the risk of chronic kidney disease and venous thromboembolism in sickle cell trait. She has also collaborated with the U.S. Uniformed Services University, National Collegiate Athletic Association and ASH to establish policy and research priorities for exertional rhabdomyolysis in military recruits and elite athletes with sickle cell trait.

Dr. Naik earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical and electrical engineering from Duke University, a medical degree with honors in research from Cornell University and a Master of Health Science from the Bloomberg School of Public Health. She then completed an internal medicine residency and hematology fellowship at Johns Hopkins, where she served as Assistant Chief of Service for the Osler Medical Residency.
