Michael Velaetis, PA-C, was named program director of the Physician Assistant (PA) Critical Care Residency Program, effective March 1, 2026.
Michael is a critical care physician assistant within the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and Oncology Intensive Care Unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
After earning his Master's of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the CCBC Essex-Towson University program in 2011, he practiced critical care medicine at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center. He joined the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) in 2015. Since then, he has been deeply involved in the clinical training of PCCM fellows, residents from the Osler Medical Residency, and PA critical care residents with an emphasis on critical care medicine, bedside procedures, and the application of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Michael received the inaugural Opportunity Award for Johns Hopkins Medicine Advanced Providers for creating a comprehensive POCUS training curriculum.
Currently, Michael serves as the director of ultrasound education for the Biocontainment Unit and is a member of the quality improvement project for nursing-led mobility in the MICU.
As program director of the PA critical care residency, Michael will work with Dr. Nathan Wright, medical director of the residency, to continue the success of the program. Please join us in congratulating him on his new role.
