Members of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center community, patients’ families, and loved ones gathered in July for the Annual Palliative Care Memorial, hosted by the Bayview Palliative Care Team. The ceremony honored patients who had died during the past year while receiving care from the Palliative Care service and created a space for remembrance, healing, and gratitude.
Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, chaplains, social workers, staff, and families came together to reflect on the meaningful relationships formed through compassionate care. At the center of the ceremony was a ritual of light: as each patient’s name was read aloud, families were invited to light an electric candle in remembrance. One by one, the room brightened, with each light representing a life remembered and a legacy carried forward.
Families also shared stories of their loved ones, bringing moments of laughter, tears, and connection. The gathering reflected the heart of palliative care — caring for the whole person and supporting those who love them through some of life’s most difficult moments.
The Annual Memorial continues to be a meaningful tradition, honoring the lives of patients while recognizing the lasting impact of compassionate care on families, caregivers, and colleagues alike.
