After 15 years, Tony Kalloo will step down as the director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology on February 1, 2020.
Dr. Kalloo joined the Hopkins faculty in 1988. During that time, he has proven to be an incredible innovator, valuable mentor and world-class clinician. He is the pioneer of natural orifice surgery, a technique that enables abdominal surgery without the use of incisions, founder of the Hopkins Gastroenterology and Hepatology Resources Center, a 3,000-page multi-lingual web resource for patients and physicians, and holds several patents including ones for the use of Botulinum toxin in the GI tract, endoscopic cryotherapy and the winged biliary/pancreatic stent. He is an esteemed advisor to trainees and faculty alike and a strong advocate for the members of his division. Castle Connolly has ranked him a top doctor in both the Baltimore area and nationwide.
Tony’s selfless leadership put Hopkins on the map for advanced procedures like therapeutic endoscopy. Under his direction, the division has been consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report, which has ranked The Johns Hopkins Hospital in the top five best hospitals for gastroenterology for more than five years. The respect he has earned from both faculty and staff is only part of what makes it clear he has led with distinction. For this and many other reasons I am extremely grateful to Tony and his contributions to the division and our department. I thank him for his commitment and dedication to our employees, patients and Hopkins overall.
Anne Marie Lennon, professor and clinical director of GI, will serve as interim director of the division.
