Did you know that JHU participates in an annual competition to help foster better cold-storage practices? And that JHU offers an internal reward of $4,000 for the top performing labs?
An ultra-low temperature freezer can consume as much electricity annually as an average single-family home. Better your lab’s cold storage practices and compete amongst JHU labs by taking part in the Freezer Challenge! Supported by the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) and My Green Lab, this challenge is designed to promote best practices in cold storage management for laboratories around the world. Last year, JHU labs saved up to 287 kWh/day (~105,000 kWh) by completing actions for the challenge.
The annual competition operates from January to July and each of the top JHU winners from the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and on the Homewood campus will be awarded a cash prize of $4,000 towards energy-efficient upgrades and repairs. Last year’s JHU winners used their $4,000 for freezer organization and repair, as well as subsidizing the cost of a new energy-efficient thermal cycler.
