This award, sponsored by the Department of Medicine Task Force on Women’s Academic Careers in Medicine, recognizes a DOM faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to supporting and advancing faculty and fellows by acting as a sponsor.
A sponsor is a person in a leadership position who actively and visibly supports, advocates, and protects the career advancement of faculty members and fellows. Sponsorship activities focus on increasing visibility, credibility, and access to professional networks, and may include (non-inclusive): nominating for awards, editorial boards, meeting/session chairs, and high-profile institutional and national committees. A sponsor may also play a key role in coaching faculty members and fellows for leadership roles. While a mentor focuses on career development, a sponsor focuses more on providing opportunities for high-level career advancement.
This award honors Dr. Susan M. MacDonald, who passed away in September 2020. Dr. MacDonald was a pioneer, fearlessly advocating for women both within the Department and the School. In 1989, she was a founding member of the Task Force on Women’s Academic Careers in Medicine and its chair from 1995-1997. In 2004, she was the 106th woman to become a Johns Hopkins professor and mentored many of the women who came after her. She received numerous leadership and mentoring awards and held a central role in the Department of Medicine in overseeing faculty career development and promotion.
Nomination letters that describe specific examples of sponsorship activities for multiple faculty members and fellows and the impact on the career advancement on the faculty members and fellows will be viewed favorably.
