Dr. Craig Hendrix, Professor Emeritus and former director of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, recently received the Oscar B. Hunter Career Award in Therapeutics, the premier award of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
The Oscar B. Hunter Career Award in Therapeutics was established in 1955 to honor individual scientists for outstanding contributions to clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. This award recognizes a meritorious career in drug research, excellence or contributions in direct patient care, and a distinguished teaching career. The goal of the award is to honor a scientist for outstanding contributions to clinical pharmacology and therapeutics over the individual's professional life.
Over the past four decades, Dr. Hendrix has transformed the field of clinical pharmacology through groundbreaking research in HIV prevention, drug development, and patient care. He has led over 120 phase I trials and provided clinical pharmacology support to another 80 clinical trials, including nine pivotal phase III trials that shaped global HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis—or PrEP—guidelines, now protecting people worldwide.
Beyond his research, Dr. Hendrix is a dedicated educator and mentor, having guided dozens of clinicians and scientists, many of whom now hold leadership positions in academia, industry, and government. He has also championed diversity, equity, and inclusion in clinical research, through the recruitment and promotion of diverse faculty and trainees, and ensuring that the benefits of his work reach underserved populations.
