If you spend some time on the fifth floor of Osler, you may come across a photo of the late Paul Lietman hanging on the wall outside of room 526. What you may not know is that Paul Stanley Lietman, MD, PhD, was an internationally recognized clinical pharmacologist who left his mark not only on Hopkins, but the world.
Dr. Lietman was involved in many areas of Hopkins, holding appointments in Medicine, Pharmacology and Molecular Science and Pediatrics while also directing the Division of Clinical Pharmacology from 1972 to 2001. He founded the Johns Hopkins Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation, the nation’s first program to offer a PhD in clinical investigation, established the Drug Development Unit and created the position hospital pharmacologist. While directing academic relations for Johns Hopkins International, he made major contributions to programs in Trinidad, Lebanon, Singapore and China. As a researcher, he pioneered antiviral treatments, including drugs for herpes simplex virus and HIV and defined factors around the effectiveness and safety of antibiotics. He remains a highly acclaimed mentor whose teaching inspired clinicians both young and old.
The portrait, funded by an anonymous donor and unveiled at a ceremony in March, symbolizes Dr. Lietman’s dedication and the lasting impact of his work.
