I am pleased to announce that Dr. Samuel C. Durso, MD, MBA, will be our next Director of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center effective July 1, 2020. His new position will combine the roles of site leader at Bayview with his current responsibilities as executive vice chair.
Dr. Durso’s stellar leadership of the number one ranked Division of Geriatrics over the past decade speaks volumes, and his contributions as executive vice chair over the several months have only added to my confidence in his abilities. I am grateful to have someone so dedicated to JHBMC and the Department of Medicine take on this critically important leadership role—especially during this unprecedented time.
Chris obtained his medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in 1978 where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. In 2007, he earned his M.B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. Following residency training in internal medicine at the University of Alabama Teaching Hospitals in Birmingham, he practiced in Columbia, SC. In 1995, he was recruited to the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology to lead a new community based clinical and educational program. Later, he served as fellowship program director and clinical director before being named director in 2010.
Chris will take over for Dr. David Hellmann, who has led the DOM at Bayview with distinction since 2000, and will be stepping down at the end of the academic year. In order to fulfill these large roles, Chris will step down as director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology. Many thanks to Dr. Cynthia Boyd who has agreed to serve as interim director of the division, as well as our search committee lead by Drs. Nadia Hansel and Kostas Lyketsos.
