Security Update Will Affect Use of Microsoft Office

In December, a security setting will be applied to many Department of Medicine computer users affiliated with the East Baltimore campus. This setting will prevent the use of Microsoft Office 365 (e.g. local installed versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and OneDrive) on computers (e.g. home computers) not managed by our CTS IT support team. This change improves our alignment with institutional policies regarding security of confidential information while minimizing disruption of our daily work – this will not restrict use of the online/web version of Office 365. This change is likely to go unnoticed by users who already follow restrictions on the use of unmanaged devices discussed in during faculty orientation sessions, responsible conduct of research sessions, and prior Medicine Matters blog posts (in last month, 2018, and 2017). This change will reduce the likelihood that confidential information will reside on devices not managed by CTS/IT.
