Generative AI: What Faculty Need to Know

As you may have read in the JHU announcement dated December 11, 2025, Johns Hopkins has launched HopGPT, a secure, Hopkins‑developed generative AI platform available free of charge to all JHU and JHM faculty, staff, and students. HopGPT provides JHED‑authenticated access to multiple large language models (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Llama) in a privacy‑protective environment appropriate for institutional and sensitive data.

Department of Medicine Guidance

Consistent with University guidance, the DOM does not expect faculty to individually pay for commercially available “base” AI tools (e.g., standard ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions) when comparable functionality is already available through HopGPT at no cost. As such, reimbursement or grant charging for basic LLM subscriptions (e.g., ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro) is generally not supported when HopGPT meets the need.
The DOM recognizes that some faculty are building or extending AI tools for research or educational innovation. In these cases, faculty may need capabilities not currently available within HopGPT, such as:
  • API access, tokens, or usage credits
  • Custom AI development or testing
  • Grant‑funded or instructional AI applications

Given this distinction, DOM members are encouraged to explore HopGPT, review the GenAI resources and training materials available through IT@JH, and reach out to [email protected] if they have questions about appropriate AI use or reimbursement pathways

Looking Ahead

HopGPT—and the broader ecosystem of AI tools at Johns Hopkins—will continue to evolve. As Hopkins expands functionality, we expect that guidance on approved and discouraged tools will be updated, with an emphasis on helping faculty innovate while maintaining institutional standards for security, compliance, and stewardship.
